The Reality of Online Education: A Tutor's Perspective
Online education programs have become increasingly prevalent because of the flexibility and convenience they offer students.
As an academic tutor who has worked with numerous students using these impersonal online platforms, I've witnessed firsthand their challenges and shortcomings.
+ Relying on Internet Searches
One constant I've observed is the tendency for students to rely heavily on internet searches to complete homework assignments and quizzes. Rather than engaging with the material and actively learning, many students opt for shortcuts by simply searching for answers online and copying them into the designated tools.
While this may yield immediate results in the short term, it usually leads to a lack of genuine understanding and retention of the material.
As a result, when these students transition to higher education, whether it be freshman year of college or placement tests for advanced courses, they are ill-prepared and struggle to meet academic expectations. Many find themselves facing failure or the need to retake classes, despite having received high grades in their online courses.
+ Mastery is More Important than Grades
This discrepancy highlights a significant flaw in the online education system – the emphasis on grades over mastery of content.
Moreover, the challenges extend beyond online education to traditional public and private schools. Many students lack essential study habits and struggle to retain basic arithmetic and algebra concepts, even into their junior and senior years of high school.
Grade inflation further exacerbates the problem, as students are awarded high marks without demonstrating true mastery of the material.
+ Striving for Excellence
While the pressure from school administrations to inflate grades and pass students regardless of mastery perpetuates the cycle of academic complacency, I am extremely grateful for the proactive involvement of parents who refuse to accept mediocrity and push their students to strive for excellence.
When it comes to education, both online and traditional, it's essential to prioritize genuine learning over superficial achievement. As educators, parents, and students alike, we must advocate for rigorous standards and meaningful assessments that foster true understanding and mastery of content, rather than simply aiming for high grades.
Ultimately, by reevaluating our priorities and committing to a culture of academic excellence, we can empower students to thrive in any educational environment and prepare them for success in the future.
