UD Arena 1975 Mideast Regional Finals (I WAS THERE)

Indiana comes into the tournament undefeated. Kentucky and Indiana progress to the regional final that everyone was dying to see.

Bobby Knight had lost one of his key players, Scottie May, to a broken arm. (I am still hunting around for the player introductions and tipoff, where Coach Knight started May, cast on arm. To say the Hoosier faithful were fired up is an understatement. From what I remember, a quick timeout was called after the opening tip and May was subbed out.

Alumni on Campus

The game was on a Saturday. The alumni of the schools started showing up and were there in force. But at least as far as I remember, it was the Hoosier alums who were cranked. Again, they firmed believed they were headed for an undefeated season and national championship.

That Kentucky team was anchored by the bookend “trees” Robey and Phillips. Kent Benson lead the Hoosiers. Indiana was hurt by the absence of Scottie May, due to the aforementioned broken arm.

Why Was I There?

At the time,I was a student at UD. I was associated with volunteering at a children’s home near campus. I was with our group where we sold refreshments at sporting events; this one at UD Arena. I worked the aisles selling sodas. I don’t think I got much of a chance to sit down. But you can bet I took a number of peaks at the action!

Great times. Great memories.
