How to Select a Tutoring/Teaching Mentor
I’ll make this quick and to the point.
When you are interviewing a tutor, what are you looking for? What do you ask? My experience is that many, probably at least half only want to know what I charge. You are doing YOURSELF and your CHILD a gross disservice by not thoroughly interviewing this service provider.
At a minimum, you should be interested in asking for and about (in addition to normal logistics)
- referrals
- “When you teach a subject/topic do you rely on a lecture approach or socratic teaching approach or something else?
- “What level of preparation do you require of the students you work with.”
- “Do you think continuing education is important to you?”
- “If a student has a problem that they want to set up some ad hoc time, to you support that. If so, how do you do that.” ASK SPECIFICALLY then, if the student has a worksheet that they they want you to look at, how do you handle the logistics of that?
- Referring to Point 5. “Do you have and/or use Google Classrooms or another cloud/sharing archival ability to get content back and forth to and from the student” ?
Why would one NOT want to know the answers to these (and more questions) before hiring someone?
Decide what you want in a tutor
Don’t just ask how much I charge.
