You know. This is really what it all boils down to. One of the most basic of human needs. It’s never ending pull can break our spirits.

I don’t claim to be in any ball park near to the one that Navy Seals have to play in. But on the smallest level I can almost, almost imagine the pull to “tap out” during hell week. (On a very very small level).
I am now hitting the parts of Calc 3/Vector Calculus that broke me in my undergrad program. I let down this man pictured; Doc Schraut. He was my counselor. He is part of the reason that I am redoing my math major work and well, at some level trying to prove something.

My students need to know and understand that they can do hard things. They can “fail” and then get up and get on with it. It can be done.
Funny thing. I don’t hardly ever reminisce about the down times during my essentially 3 years at Dayton. I learned to grow up. Learned to mature. I was so very happy there.
With this calc material I think of the nites on 7E in Stuart Hall trying to get through our math and physics classes. I really loved those guys. Still do.
We are meant to do hard things.
